Valentina ascoltava e pensava fra sé: - Ma tu chi sei? Perché parli così? -.

-Vuoi dire Rom?-.

- Sì -.

Valentina rimase meravigliata.

THE NEW PASSENGER OF THE BUS

When Valentina went to the job in the city, she was usual to take every day the bus, in the morning at 8.30 and then in the afternoon at 13.30.

In that period she worked in city as social operator in the community of the gipsies coming from Romania and for that job she saw and recognized more easily the gypsies.

One day, during the trip back, in the middle of the usual passengers of the bus, she saw a new girl; she struck Valentina for her fluorescent aspect. She had the black hair that went down until under the bottom. It was tall, thin, with the blue eyes and of certain she didn't pass unnoticed. She had a light makeup on the face and she wore fitted tightly suits.

The instinct of Valentina told her that the girl could be a gipsy.

On the bus, that day, the new girl sat in the first place before, next to the driver.

Valentina knew that the driver would not have delayed to talk to her. The most greater part of the drivers of the line always feel like chatting, perhaps because it is boring to travel over the same road every day, every week for long months.

To go home, from the centre of the city toward the village of Valentina, the bus had to stop at quite a lot semaphores. To the second red semaphore they saw a little boy gipsy who begged for money to the standing cars.

He was not one of those that Valentina followed for her job; it probably belonged to another group coming from Romania or from some other part of Europe.

It was 13.40, the traffic was intense: rush hour, the correct time to wait for the cars and glean some coins.

The driver and the girl began to speak of that little boy to negative way, with the same sentences that Valentina had been listened around for quite a lot years: - What! Look, always to beg for money, well they don't work!? What life! Are they always here? - .

Valentina listened and thought to herself: - But you, who are? Why do you speak so? -.

She didn't say anything, she didn’t want to discuss, she was embittered and hungry.

Valentina, gotten used to be in contact with immigrants coming from different countries, she immediately realized that the new passenger talked to a strong accent. Well, she was a foreigner as that little boy to the semaphore.

Valentina had arrived. Before going out of the bus she gave her another fast look, she was curious to know where she lived, but nobody, could answer at that time that question.

The following day, Valentina phoned to her dear friend, Valeriano, who had a cafe proper to the centre of the village.

Valeriano, dates his activity, knew quite a lot people and he was an exceptional gossiper. In short, to chat with the people was the job that he was better a success. He could help her to investigate on that girl.

After a week, to the stop of the buses, Valentina that had just ended to work saw that eccentric youth again.

She saw her while she was going to greet Maria, a girl gipsy who had an one year-old child and Valentina knew her well.

- What? - Thought among herself Valentina - First she had been so hard in to judge that little boy gipsy of the semaphore and now she is so affectionate with Maria and her child, as if they were dear friends! -.

The day later, Valentina continued her investigation.

Valentina and her colleagues had to help the gipsy clan to move in a new house, gives in concession from the Town Hall. It was a small country house, without heaters, with a bath to be arranged, but surely better than to live on the street. There was also Maria, and Valentina asked her if she knew well that girl that had seen in her company the preceding day.

- Yes, she is one of us and she likes my child, because also she has a small child - said Maria.

- One of you? Is she maybe from Romania? - Valentina asked.

- No, she is from another country, but she is as us - .

- Do you mean gipsy? - .

- Yes, I do". -

Valentina was astonished. Thousand thoughts in a total confusion passed for her mind that morning.

Valentina discovered later, thanks to Valeriano, that the mysterious girl was married an Italian, a boy of the age of Valeriano, with who she had had a child and they lived in the village.

Joke of the destiny: she came from the same village of Valentina.

One day, she saw her again while she was walking with her mother-in-law on a street of the village and she commiserated with her in that instant.

Valentina had come to a conclusion: the girl probably needed to speak badly of whom was weaker of her, to feel herself accepted and strong in the middle of so much different people.

In mean to a world that it often judges with superficiality and it doesn't know the reality of the things.
